The questions that actually matter

Once you've got a shortlist, here's what's worth asking directly:

• What services do you actually offer? Make sure their range genuinely matches your needs, not just the headline services.
• Will I see the same person each visit? Continuity of care matters enormously, especially for personal or in-home support — ask directly whether they can offer this.
• What's included in the cost, and what isn't? Ask about care management fees, hourly rates, and whether there are charges for travel, weekends or public holidays. Compare what's actually left for your care once fees are deducted.
• How do you handle complaints or concerns? A provider that's open about its process for this is generally a good sign.
• Can I change my care plan as my needs change? Your needs aren't fixed forever — make sure adjusting your plan doesn't mean renegotiating everything from scratch.
• What do current clients say? Ask for references, check online reviews, and don't be shy about following up.

A practical comparison approach

Your decision will mostly come down to three things: cost (how much of your funding actually goes to care, after fees), care (the qualifications and consistency of the people actually showing up), and quality (how the provider handles things when something doesn't go to plan).

It's worth speaking to a few providers before deciding — bring a family member along if that helps, and don't feel rushed. This is a relationship, not a one-off purchase.

Domestic assistance — laundry, regular cleaning — is often one of the easiest parts of a care plan to get right, because the questions are simpler: reliability, consistency, and genuine care for your home. It's worth applying the same standard here as you would for any other part of your care.
